Android is a Linux-based operating system designed for touch screen mobile devices such as smart phones and computers tablet.Android initially developed by Android Inc., with financial support from Google, which then bought it in 2005. The operating system was released officially in 2007 , in conjunction with the establishment of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of companies hardware, software, and telecommunications that aims to promote open standards seluler.Ponsel Android device first went on sale in October 2008.
Android user interface is based on direct manipulation, using touch input similar to the action in the real world, such as swipe, knock, pinch and reverse pinch to manipulate objects on the screen. Android is an open source operating system, and Google release the code under the Apache License. With open source code and licensing permissions on Android allows the software to be freely modified and distributed by device makers, wireless operators, and application developers. In addition, the Android developer community has a large number of applications (apps) that extend the functionality of the device, generally written in the Java programming language customization version. In October 2012, there were approximately 700,000 applications available for Android, and some 25 million applications have been downloaded from Google Play, the major application store Android. A survey in April-May 2013 found that Android is the most popular platform for developers, used by 71% of mobile application developers.
The above factors have contributed to the development of Android, making it a smart phone operating system most widely used in the world, beating Symbian in 2010. Android is also a choice for technology companies who want a low-cost operating system, can be customized, and mild for high-tech devices without having to develop it from scratch. Consequently, although initially the operating system is designed specifically for smart phones and tablets, Android also be developed into additional applications in television, game consoles, digital cameras, and other electronic devices. The open nature of Android has prompted the emergence of a large number of community of application developers to use open source code as the basis for the project of making the application, by adding new features for advanced users or operate Android on the device which was officially released by using other operating systems.
In November 2013, Android share of the global smart phone market, led by Samsung products, with a percentage of 64% in March 2013. In July 2013, there were 11 868 different Android devices with different versions. The success of this operating system also makes it a target of patent litigation "smart phone wars" among technology companies. Until May 2013, a total of 900 million Android devices have been activated worldwide, and 48 billion apps have been installed from Google Play. On September 3, 2013, 1 billion Android devices have been activated.
